Alchemy – A Secretive World

Welcome to an exhibition that invites you to explore the secretive world of alchemy – from rare 16th-century books to its unexpected presence in our own time.

For centuries, alchemy has captivated inquisitive minds with its promise of transformation: the transmutation of lead into gold, matter into spirit, and ignorance into insight.

Drawing on the richly illustrated and imaginative works preserved in the unique collections of the Skokloster Library, this exhibition presents the people, ideas, and mysticism of alchemy’s golden age.
Enigmatic imagery and symbolic compositions illuminate the theories and experiments that engaged some of Europe’s foremost philosophers and practitioners. In this meeting of art, mysticism, and scholarship, a compelling visual language unfolds – one that continues to fascinate, challenge, and inspire.
